The Mumbai crime branch investigating the doping scandal surrounding mare 'Bulls Eye', which is trained by star jockey-turned-trainer Pesi Shroff, has filed an 'A Summary' report in the case. The 'A Summary' means that there is substance in the complaint, but they have not been able to nab the accused. 'A Summary' is not a closure report. It's now up to the complainant to accept the report or request the court to instruct the police to probe further.

The controversy surrounding Bulls Eye started in 2013, when the mare returned to Mahalaxmi racecourse after a stint at a Maval-based stud farm and was compulsory sampled for banned drugs. The results showed that the mare, co-owned by Vijay Shirke, K N Dhunjibhoy and Berjis Desai, had tested positive.

In February 2014, Shroff approached the Tardeo police and filed a complainant alleging foul play and the case was transferred to the crime branch. In March 2014, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) had imposed a nine-month ban on Shroff, saying he was vicariously liable for the incident as the horse's trainer.

During the course of investigation, the crime branch arrested four employee of the Maval-based stud farm. However, the cops could not get any evidence to prove their direct involvement in the case.

"In his complaint to the police, Shroff had suspected involvement of the four men as two of them were security guards at the stud farm, while the other two worked in the stable and had access to Bulls Eye," said a crime branch officer. He added, "We have not found any evidence that any banned substance was given to them by someone to implicate Shroff in a case. We have questioned nearly 100 employees of the farm but nothing has come out so far."

Investigators said that there were no CCTV cameras at the stud farm and it was very difficult to make a headway in the case in the absence of footage. The cops twice questioned Shroff's arch-rival Kawasji 'Cooji' Katrak.

"While we came across some recorded conversation among some RWITC officials, it did not throw light on the allegation of sabotage. However, it does indicate that some officials wanted to take advantage of the controversy," said the officer.

Additional commissioner of police (crime) KMM Prasanna confirmed filing of the 'A Summary' report. "I can't share much details on the case, but I can confirm that the crime branch has submitted a 'A Summary' report in a local court."

Pesi Shroff said he was not aware of any report filed by the police. "There are recorded tapes which clearly indicate who was behind the sabotage. I will decide the future course of action once I get details of the report filed by the police."
