Soon, you will be able to check how much radiation is being emitted from the mobile tower installed on a building in your locality with the click of a mouse button. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) will be launching an online portal to help people check if mobile towers across the country are complying with radiation norms.

DoT officials said that all data on electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation, norms along with details about all mobile towers will be uploaded on the portal.

“It is called National EMF Portal. It will help citizens check the radiation status of a tower and whether it is complying with the radiation norms from the human safety point of view. At present, the validation process of the portal is on,” a senior official from the department told dna.

The portal will contain a list of all mobile towers, base stations, address of the sites, compliance reports about the radiation and the kind of frequency. “It will be put to field trial in a month. The trial will be on for three months in at least three to four states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab or Haryana. We are hoping it will be ready for launch in January,” added the official.

“You can enter the portal, select the city and check out the radiation emitted from any tower,” explained the official, adding that uploading the data will take time as they are still collecting all the information from operators.

Citizens have welcomed the decision. “It is a very good move. At present, we have to make a complaint and shell out Rs4,000 to check how much radiation is being emitting from a mobile tower. It is also a lengthy process,” said Nikhil Desai, a resident of King’s Circle.
