Denied a new dress, Andheri teen hangs herself

Sunday, 29 June 2014 - 6:40am IST | Agency: dna

Madhuri Pawar, 19, had a bitter quarrel with her mother on Saturday when she refused to buy her a new dress. An hour later, Madhuri was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the kitchen in their Andheri (East) home.

It is not uncommon for children to quarrel with their parents when they do not get what they want, so the Pawars never imagined that their daughter would take such a drastic step. According to the police, Madhuri took her own life at around 1 pm on Saturday, while her father Vilas Pawar was sleeping in another room and her mother had left home for some work.

"A few minutes before the incident, Madhuri had an argument with her mother because she
had bought a new dress for her elder sister. According to the mother's statement, she had told Madhuri that she bought the dress for her sister because she was older. To this, Madhuri replied that she was always given her sister's old clothes to wear," said sub-inspector RD Yamgar of MIDC police station.

"After an argument, Madhuri's mother left home for some work and Madhuri hanged herself in a fit of rage," added Yamgar.

The incident came to light when Vilas woke up and found her hanging in the kitchen. He immediately called his wife and their neighbours. They rushed Madhuri to Rajawadi hospital, but she was declared dead before admission.

"During the investigations, Madhuri's family members told the police that she was very short-tempered and always fought with her siblings and parents over small issues," said a police officer.

"A case of accidental death has been registered, but the case is being investigated from all possible angles. We are recording the statements of the victim's neighbour and relatives to find out more," added the officer.

Madhuri's father used to work in private firm but is currently unemployed. Her mother works as a domestic help, said the police.
