Dengue cases rise to 79 in first two weeks of August in Mumbai

The number of dengue cases have risen in the month of August in comparison to in the month of June and July. The total number of dengue cases diagnosed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) within 15 days in August is 79.

As per the data given by the epidemiology cell of the BMC’s public health department, in July, 60 cases were diagnosed and in June, 21 cases were diagnosed. Within two weeks of August, the number of cases increased to 79. This year in monsoon, so far 160 cases of dengue have been reported across the city.

The BMC in the report also stated that within two weeks of August 1,183 cases of dengue-like illness were admitted in the city’s hospital in comparison to 995 probable cases of dengue-like illness admitted in July.

In August 2017, around 1,936 cases of dengue-like illnesses were admitted and 93 cases were confirmed to be treated for dengue.

Speaking about the rise in dengue cases, a health officer from the BMC’s public health department, said, “Measures need to be taken by the citizens for dengue and malaria mosquito breeding. The mosquitoes breed in clean stagnant water. People should keep the terrace clean during monsoon season. There should be a proper system for the water to flow and not get stagnant. Regular cleaning of the house where mosquitoes can breed in water needs to be cleaned.”

This year in monsoon one 32-year-old resident of Kurla lost her life in the month of July. The cause of death was revealed as dengue shock syndrome with acute respiratory distress syndrome.
