The financial capital of India is making its presence felt in Delhi elections. The city and state are leading in the share of funds the Aam Aadmi Party has raised so far. Party leader Arvind Kejriwal hoped to raise a further Rs 30-40 lakh in a donor event held in Mumbai on Thursday.

Of the total Rs97.20 lakh raised by the party in this month, Maharashtra's share (33.2%) in funding for Delhi polls has been twice that of the national capital (15.1%). Supporters Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and other states too raised funds for AAP.

"The party is looking to raise Rs40 crore in all. It is not surprising that Maharashtra (Mumbai) is one of the prime fundraiser because the state along with Delhi has always led in funding our party and the movement since its inception," said AAP leader from city Mayank Gandhi.

Kejriwal met the volunteers who has helped the party collect about Rs 20 lakh. The figure though was yet to reflect on AAP website, which stated Thursday's collection to be over Rs7 lakh at the time of going to press.

A dinner meet – I Fund Honest Politics – along the lines of American-style fundraising was organised in Worli. Nearly 200 donor passes, each worth Rs20,000 and offering an opportunity to meet Kejriwal, were distributed. Gandhi said, "This is a kind of crowd funding. It is a way of collecting donation and we take money in an official capacity which is all listed on our website."
