A major fire broke out in the seminar hall of the College of Nursing at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday. Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames, said officials.

While no casualty was reported, five rooms were affected including a completely burnt seminar hall.

"At 12:20 pm, we received a call reporting that there was fire on the second floor of the AIIMS building. Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it was doused within 30 minutes. The police are investigating the case to find out the cause of the fire that damaged about four to five rooms in the hospital," a fire official said.

The exact cause of fire is not known but it has been speculated that a short circuit caused the fire. The doctors' room next to the seminar hall, near the old operation theater building, on the second floor were also destroyed.

Around the same time last year, DNA had reported that most of the fire extinguishers at the hospital have been way past their expiry date. A hospital, as large as AIIMS, is prone to fire and these extinguishers help contain the fire between the call and the arrival of fire tenders, and overdue extinguishers may or may not work when needed.

In the past two-and-a-half years, AIIMS has seen several small and big fire incidents. While this latest incident of fire did not do any harm, the last major one in February 2015, at the porta-cabin in administration block, destroyed all the legal files containing important data were destroyed.

In a CAG audit conducted last year, it was found out that the majority of Delhi hospitals either do not have proper fire exits or lack the necessary safety equipment.
