The Delhi gang-rape incident in December last year raised concerns about women safety not only in India but across the world. After the incident, the Mumbai police took several measures to ensure women’s safety.

In spite of all the steps, the Mumbai police registered at least 11 cases of gang rape till November 30 this year.

While some say that more cases are getting registered due to awareness among people, others say that many such cases go unreported.

In 2012, there were eight gang-rape incidents and the year before that nine cases were registered.

Sources said that in nine out of 10 cases the accused were known to the victim. While many victims have the courage to come forward and demand justice, some decide to suffer silently, sometimes, not even mentioning the incident to their family members.

“The increase in the number of such cases is not because such crimes have gone up but because more and more people are reporting such incidents,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

“People now have confidence in the police and are sure that the accused will be arrested. We have made the police department women-friendly. We have women police officers and constables in all police stations to handle cases of crimes against women. Victims feel comfortable talking to women officers instead of men and can approach them without hesitation,” said the police officer.

The Shakti Mill gang-rape incident, in which an intern working with a publication was raped by six men, was a wake-up call for the police.

While it can be said that due to the pressure of public, the investigations into these cases are carried out with utmost urgency leading to quick detection and arrests but such incidents continue to occur.

Another senior police officer said: “Women should be careful while choosing whom to go out with.
It is a known fact that most perpetrators are known to the victims. Women should make sure that they never go out alone, especially to secluded places, with men. It is about taking safety measures to protect yourself from such crimes. Also, women should not feel embarrassed to come forward and report such crimes. If the accused are free, then they would go on repeating such offences.”
