A Delhi-based, real estate agent was recently arrested by the Santacruz police for allegedly duping a Mumbai-based hotelier Vijaykumar Shetty to the tune of Rs40 lakh.
The accused promised to give three imported cars from German embassy, which they claimed were on auction for just 40lakhs, to the victim. In order to convince Shetty, the accused also took him to the German consulate in New Delhi and gave him fake consulate papers.
The arrested has been identified as Aman Chaudhary, a resident of Kamalpur in Delhi. The police are on the lookout for two other accomplices of Chaudhary, identified as Shivam Tyagi and Ravikant Sharma. Shetty owns a popular bar and restaurant in Santacruz (W).
According to the police, in 2011 Chaudhary had visited Shetty's hotel and started keeping intouch with him on a regular basis. Chaudhary had told Shetty that he was into real estate, construction and also dealt in sale of imported cars. In 2012, Chaudhary told Shetty that the German embassy were auctioning three imported cars for just Rs40 lakh. He also claimed to have "good contacts" within the embassy.
"Shetty and his cousin brother went to New Delhi where Chaudhary showed them three cars. Chaudhary introduced Shivam Tyagi to the victim as the person who has contacts within the embassy. Shetty paid Rs40 lakh in three installments to Chaudhary who also offered unique vehicle numbers for the vehicles," said an officer with the Santacruz police.
After few months, when the delivery date was drawing near, Chaudhary changed his mobile number and started avoiding Shetty. "Later, Shetty learnt that he has been duped and lodged a complaint against Chaudhary last month with the Santacruz police. On receipt of specific tip-off we arrested him," the officer said.
