Delhi and Dubai top hotspots for time-crunched Mumbai fliers

Other international popular destinations include London, Singapore, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi

Mumbai may be the financial capital of the country, but when it comes to travel, Delhi and Dubai have been the most preferred destination. Data provided by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has revealed that of the total domestic and international passenger traffic to and from Mumbai airport between April 2018 and August 2018, maximum fliers flew between the Mumbai-Dubai and Mumbai-Delhi sectors.

As per the data, out of total 6.08 million international passengers that flew in and out of Mumbai Airport between April 2018 and August 2018, a majority of them travelled to Dubai followed by London, Singapore, Bangkok and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai-bound traffic share stood at 1.02 million. In case of domestic travel, nearly 14.65 million passengers flew to and from Mumbai Airport between the same period, maximum travelled to Delhi followed by Bengaluru, Goa, Hyderabad and Chennai.  

With cheap airfares and easy travel, looks like the travel bug has smitten all and sundry. Sharat Dhall, chief operating officer at Yatra.com said that Mumbai is one of the busiest airports in India. “Travellers from Mumbai have chosen Delhi and Dubai as the most popular destinations. The travel to Delhi seems to be mostly driven by business travellers since Mumbai is the financial hub,” Dhall said.

There were 20.73 million domestic and international passengers who used the Mumbai Airport in the above mentioned period. The second most travelled destination was Bengaluru after Delhi that handled 1.61 million passengers followed by Goa and Hyderabad handling 1 million passengers and Chennai with 0.99 million passengers.

In case of international traffic, the Mumbai-London sector handled 0.46 million of passengers followed by Singapore (0.39 million), Bangkok (0.38 million) and Abu Dhabi (0.29 million).

In terms of per day flight handling capacity, Mumbai Airport has the record of handling 1,000 flights in a single day in 2018. The Mumbai airport handles around 940 flights daily.

Another travel portal MakeMyTrip said that Indians travel to Dubai since the travel time is less. “In the past few years, Dubai has been listed as one of the top destinations picked by Indian travellers and the demand is increasing each year,” the travel portal said.

In the past 10 years, the overall traffic movement has doubled. The Mumbai Airport handled 48.50 million passengers in 2017-2018 compared to the 22.25 million passengers in 2006-2007. As per data of MIAL, the traffic growth doubled in balanced manner for both domestic as well as international sector. This as the international traffic handled by Mumbai Airport handled in 2017-2018 was 13.65 million compared to 7.35 million in 2006-2007.
