A major arterial road in the eastern suburbs, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Road (LBS road), witnesses heavy traffic congestion round the clock due to the connectivity it offers. However, motorists continue to suffer due to the width of the road, which is narrow.

Even as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) deadline of May 31 nears, quite a few patches on the road are still under repairs, especially the stretch from Ghatkopar to Kurla. A civic officer has informed that the road will be motorable before monsoon; however, the pending work may resume only after the monsoon.

The LBS road connects Thane to Sion, intersects at Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road and Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road. It also connects to harbour suburbs and further towards Vashi where it intersects at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd link road.

Approximately 3 lakh vehicles use this road on a daily basis and yet such a crucial road continues to be in a pathetic shape.

The stretch from R city Mall, Ghatkopar to Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla has many areas in the centre of the four-lane road which are under repair. The barricades occupy almost two lanes in addition to the illegally parked trucks.

Meanwhile, the stretch opposite Pheonix Marketcity has two lanes in the centre of the road dug up which leads to a traffic snarl even during the day.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner (L ward), Ajitkumar Ambi said, "The work is carried out by the hydraulic engineering department. I regularly meet the officials and have asked them to complete the work before the monsoon. The officers have informed that the road will be motorable in the next 3 to 4 days."

"According to the commissioner's direction, the roads should be made motorable before the spell of rains begin. The pending work may restart after the monsoon season is over. I will ensure that the roads are made motorable by May 31," Ambi added.
