Sub-standard electric cables, decorative material like wooden panel and wooden false ceiling caused fire to spread in Crytal near Parel Bridge in Dadar (east) on August 22, that left four dead and many injured.

This was revealed in the report submitted by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) on Tuesday. The report also highlighted that how developer and residents ignored maintenance of fire fighting system.

As per the report, the probable cause of fire could be defective electric circuit and due to open electric shaft, smoke and heat travelled upward. "An electric spark occurred in the electric installation and it came in contact of combustible material nearby," said an official from the MFB.

In the report it was mentioned that the severity of the fire was noticed at 12th and 13th floor of the highrise. Smoke and heat accumulated in the lift lobby and staircase that posed difficulty for tenants to escape.

Promod Kumar Singh, security guard of the building and one of the eyewitness stated that he received a phone call from one of the resident from eighth floor Dr Sanjeev Kumar about fire in electric cable shaft around 8.10am. He then informed other resident through intercome of the building.

The fire brigade team also found that scrapes were found in staircase and parking area. Even the two gates of terrace were also locked that posed hurdle in escape of residents. Apart from illegal occupation, the refuge area of the building was also not found as per the requirements.

The MFB suggested that the building should not be given occupation certificate unless the developer or occupants do not obtain no objection certificate as per fire rsik point of view under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Act 2006. In addition, the designated officer from the F South ward has to visit the premises to verify the internal changes carried out if any is required.
