Sharmila Sudhir Amin, wife of senior fire officer Sudhir Amin, who died on Thursday after battling with life for five days, has demanded that he be declared a martyr. She has also insisted that her husband be given compensation as per his new designation of deputy fire officer. Amin's promotion was approved by a general body meeting on May 12, just two days before his death.

Amin had sustained severe burn injuries while extinguishing the May 9 fire at a building in Kalbadevi. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. While Amin's son is a class III student, his daughter is in senior KG.

In a letter to the chief fire officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade, Sharmila has demanded that her husband be declared a martyr and a certificate be issued in this regard. Besides a permanent job, she has also demanded that her late husband's monthly salary be given to the family till the age of his retirement and that school fees of both of her children be borne by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

Apart from the above demands, Sharmila has urged the fire chief to ensure that a house in Mumbai is given to them from the chief minister's quota as per a Presidential recommendation. She has annexed the copy of the letter written by the President's office to then chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in this regard.

One of Sharmila's relatives, Kumar Bangera said, "The demands that Sharmila has made in the letter are purely on merits and not on compassionate grounds. Hence, the civic body ought to meet these demands as soon as possible."

However, the civic administration refuted the entire issue by issuing a disclaimer. The press statement sent by the civic administration said, "Facts regarding rumours that deputy chief fire officer (late) Sudhir Amin's family denied the cheque of death compensation paid by BMC are as follows. The cheque is not rejected. There is technical mistake in cheque and receipt detail. To avoid further problems, it is decided to hand over rectified cheque. Amin's family has expressed their emotions, saying that all the firemen and officers who sacrifice their lives for civilian safety should be honoured with awards like gallantry and be given the status of martyr, so that in future their families would be able to get all due benefits. This issue pertains to state & Central governments. Hence, MCGM shall place their demands before the government for its consideration. Honourable mayor of Mumbai Snehal Aambekar and honourable leader of the House Trishna Vishwasrao have assured Amin's family that all due benefits shall be given by MCGM."
