When the fire brigade officials broke open the bathroom door of a charred Andheri residence on Thursday, they found a dead mother tightly embracing the body of her 10-year-old son, and the bodies of two other family members
Four members, including a brother-sister duo, died in the blaze; only their father, Abbas Kapasi, managed to escape.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade officials received a call around 2.09 am about a fire that broke out in a two-bedroom flat on the third floor of Maimoon Manzil building in Bohri Colony, Marol, Andheri (E). The fire brigade reached the spot at around 2.34 am.

"As soon as the fire broke out and smoke spread through the house, Abbas rushed out to call for help," said a police officer. "When he tried to re-enter the house after gathering help, he realised he had been locked out, probably due to the auto-lock," said a police officer.

Police found Kapasi's 80-year-old father Daud Ali dead on the sofa in the hall, his 14-year-old daughter Sakina was found in the bedroom, while his wife Tasneem, 42, and son Moin passed away in the bathroom. It appears that Tasneem took Moin with her there in a bid to save him.

Sakina and Daud Ali suffered 100 per cent burns, while Tasneem and Moin sustained 40 per cent and 25 per cent burns. They were declared dead before admission by doctors at Cooper hospital.

"Prima-facie, it looks like the fire started due to a short-circuit from an air-conditioner in the flat," said a police officer. The fire was brought under control by 4.15 am.

Five other residents of the building who suffered suffocation were discharged after preliminary treatment from hospital.

"Neither neighbours, not relatives of Kapasi have any complaints or suspicion," the officer said. "People say Kapasi, an accountant, is a good man and an active member of society. He had his home renovated only couple of months ago."

"An accidental death report has been registered at MIDC Police Station. We are awaiting postmortem and fire brigade report," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone X, N.D. Reddy.
