In a pre-monsoon review meeting held by standing committee chairman and Shiv Sena leader Yashodhar Phanase on Monday afternoon, a deadline of June 5 has been decided to complete all the de-silting work by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The meeting was attended by officials from the road and bridges and SWD departments.

According to the de-silting status report, 94,531 cubic metres of silt has been removed from the city, while 1,40,668 cubic metres and 1,26,000 cubic metres of silt has been removed from the eastern and the western suburbs respectively.

Considering the water-logging problems during monsoon, Phanase also asked for 244 water pumps to be put up across the city by May 25. "Every ward should be provided with at least three extra water pumps and extra manpower, in case of any emergency," Phanase said.

"If contractors do not meet the deadlines, action will be taken against them. They might also be blacklisted," he added. "The officials have, however, assured that the work will be completed within the deadline."
