The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on Monday said that noise levels in the daytime during Diwali was very high. However, experts say that this may have been due to the addition of the traffic noise as the levels were recorded mostly at busy places.

The MPCB monitored Ambient Noise Levels at 158 different locations of all 26 corporations in the state. The survey was conducted for three days from November 11 to 13 for 24 hours, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) protocol.

According to SC Kollur, scientific officer at MPCB, day time noise levels at south Mumbai and western suburbs have shown an increasing trend as compared to 2014 monitoring levels. However, the eastern suburbs showed a mixed trend. Other suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar have shown a decline of decibel levels during the daytime in the festival period.

The Equivalent Continuous Sound Level (Leq) at the Nariman Point area during the daytime on November 11 was 80.9 decibels, while during the night-time it was 67.6 decibels. Similarly, 83.2 dB noise level at Shivaji Park area of Dadar during day time dropped to 66.8 dB during night-time.

The board also conducted Ambient Air Quality at selected locations in Maharashtra. The real time Air Quality data for Mumbai, Pune, Solapur and Chandrapur cities indicates a sudden rise of Particulate Matter (PM10, PM2.5) due to bursting of firecrackers.

According to Sumaira Abdulali, convener of Awaaz Foundation in Mumbai, the noise levels at night time have declined at most locations, which was noted even in the NGO's data of noise level monitoring.
