Days after the release of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), which threw light on the poor state of education in rural Maharashtra, Vinod Tawde, minister for human resources and development is all set to attend the world education forum at London to be held from January 21 to 24.

Education ministers from around 80 countries are participating in the forum, which will focus on understanding emerging trends in education, improvement in curriculum with better learning outcomes and skills. Tawde will also deliver a talk at Kings College, London, on quality of education.

Apart from some key sessions on quality education, the forum will also see the release of a few reports of major significance. This includes a report by UNESCO and OECD on out-of-school children and learning abilities around the world.

Apart from Tawde, the Indian delegation going to UK for the forum includes Gujarat's education minister Bhupendra Singh Chudasama and Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who holds the skill development portfolio at the Centre, according to a press release from the Maharashtra HRD minister's office which has raised quite a few eyebrows.

The ASER revealed that 24% class VIII students in rural Maharashtra cannot even read class II-level texts. ASER's sample survey also revealed a drastic fall in arithmetic ability of students in the state. Over 2% of the sampled class VIII students failed to read letters, words and numbers.

ASER figures show that in the last four years, the mathematical ability of students has reduced by 50%. In 2010, about 73% students of Class VIII were able to divide numbers, while in 2014 only around 33% were able to clear the same sample test.

Tawde did not respond to calls and messages from this correspondent.
