In a shocking incident in Thane, a day after a 19-year-old girl died after consuming rat poison, her mother committed suicide by jumping off from a 17th floor of posh building in Thane's Vasant Vihar area on Sunday morning. It is suspected that the woman took the step in a state of shock. The police said that they have not found any suicide note in connection with both the deaths and are probing the motive behind the deaths.

The deceased woman has been identified as Saguna Kodamanchili, 45, a native of Andhra Pradesh. According to the police sources, Saguna used to reside with her daughter Navya, a chartered accountant.

Two days ago Navya had consumed rat poison due to unknown reasons and was later admitted at a private hospital. Navya succumbed on Saturday during treatment around 2:30 am. Navya's death left Saguna under severe trauma and shock.

Navya's body was preserved for a funeral till Sunday. When all relatives reached Saguna's residence and were making arrangement for funeral, around 5:30 am on Sunday, Saguna suddenly came out of her home and jumped off from the corridor of the high-rise.

"Saguna's husband ran behind her but before he could reach, Saguna had already jumped off. Navya had recently given her exams and we all are wondering why she took such a drastic step" said a resident of the building where the incident took place.

According to the police, in Saguna's death case an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered at Chitalsar-Manpada Police Station, while an ADR registered at Vartak Nagar Police Station in connection with Navya's death.

"We have recorded statements of few relatives and our preliminary inquiry is on to establish the reason of Navya's death. It is suspected that Saguna was depressed since her only daughter died and in a state of shock she took the drastic step. Saguna's body was handed over to her family after conducting panchanama and postmortem," said Ganpat Pingale, Senior police inspector of Chitalsar Manapada police station.
