A 15-year-old student committed suicide in the busy fishing village of Satpati, in Palghar taluka, on Tuesday, a day after she appeared for the first paper of the SSC board exam.

The Satpati police said the girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the bedroom in the afternoon.

The girl, Samiksha Meher, studied at Yashwant Nijap High School and had given the Marathi exam on Monday.

The police suggested that she may have been under stress due to the exams.

Samiksha had had lunch with her elder sister and said she wanted to be left alone to study for the Hindi language paper scheduled on Wednesday.

About an hour later, her sister knocked on the door of the room, but got no response. She called the neighbours, who broke open the door, and found her hanging. They took her to the local hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted. The police have registered a case of suicide. They say they will investigate the incident.
