When Iqbal Attarwala walked into GCC Club at Mira Road on Wednesday and was introduced as vice-president of an NGO, it raised many eyebrows. Attarwala is an alleged associate of underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel.

The NGO, World Human Rights Council, aims to help poor people to fight against injustice done to them, and it has chosen Attarwala as its vice- president in Mumbai.

During the meeting, he defended himself and said he was innocent. “I have gone through hard times and people have tarnished my image, I have come clean in the cases filed against me and I now want to help the poor fight for their rights,” said Attarwala.

“The NGO’s aim is to fight for human rights and stand against all odds to help them,” he said.
But there were whispers that the move was an attempt by Attarwala to cleanse his image. “This not only helps to portray a good image, but also helps in running illegal businesses and to convert black money into white,” a source said.
