Confusion over the opening of dance bars in Maharashtra will continue to prevail, with bar owners saying the Supreme Court on Thursday has allowed the dance bars to reopen according to old guidelines, while the State Government says these bars will operate under the new law framed earlier this year.

"The court has directed the government to issue licenses as per the old guidelines. This means we can run the bars the way we were running them till 2005," said Adarsh Shetty, President of the Association of Hotels and Restaurant (AHAR). The association has opposed the government for the past 11 years in court, said the SC order has given them new ammunition they can use to take on the government.

"Now that the apex court has asked the government to issue licenses to 26 pending cases. If they trouble us again, we will inform the court," Shetty said.

Government sources, however, say they will continue to follow the new law passed in April. "We are yet to get a copy of the order. The court has not struck down the new law. As long as that does not happen, we will continue to regulate bars according to the new law," said Vijay Satbir Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home).

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has always maintained that the dance bars will only operate according to the new law.
