Though the block on milk supply to Mumbai entered the second day, the city remained largely unaffected. Even as farmer groups tried to stop supplies from Gujarat, milk was brought into the state by the Railways.
On Wednesday, Lok Sabha MP Raju Shetti, whose Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) announced the indefinite protest, camped at Achad toll naka in Palghar and forced milk tankers from Gujarat to go back. Workers also stopped and vandalised milk tankers at Kolhapur, Sangli, Palghar, Jalna and Solapur.
Dairy farmers are demanding that dairies and federations hike procurement rates by Rs 5 per litre or the government pay them the amount as subsidy.
Though Shetti said he had not received any feelers from the government for a discussion, the State government has called for a meeting with representatives of the milk federation on Thursday. It is expected that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Dairy Development Minister Mahadev Jankar will try to resolve the agitation.
