Dahi Handi over, most injured go home

While the final toll of those injured a day after the Dahi Handi rose to 162, no serious injuries were registered. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) disaster management cell, around 114 who came with minor injuries have been discharged, while others are recovering at the hospital. No one has suffered from fatal injuries this year.

"All of those admitted to the hospital are stable," said Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM and director, medical education and major hospitals.

Most of the injuries were minor bruises or fractures. A 9-year-old child from Kandivli, who suffered head injuries, is now stable and under observation at Shatabdi Hospital. "We are watching his condition. He had a fracture in his skull and head injuries can get serious. But he is out of danger," said Dr K Pimpale, medical superintendent of the hospital.

Despite the Supreme Court ruling about restricting the height of the human pyramid, there were several cases of rules being flouted. Many children were a part of the human pyramids and cases were slapped on several Ganesh Mandals for flouting rules.

It was not just physical health that was at danger. Awaaz Foundation that calculated the decibel levels at several areas found the noise levels had doubled in most of the locations, the area opposite Shiv Sena Bhavan being the worst offender.
