For three days now, Umesh Gadapkar has not left the hospital. His 11-year-old son Sujal remains under sedation, showing little improvement following the fall from the sixth tier of a Dahi Handi organised near his home in Ulhasnagar.

"My child is in the ICU for past three days. And my wife has been in an even worse state," said the distraught father who was originally a fisherman and now drives an auto-rickshaw and takes up welding work to make ends meet.

The two mandals - Radhesham Nagar Govinda and Shiv Tej Mandal have been booked for culpable homicide as they violated the Supreme Court order that restricted participation of minors in making the human pyramid during Dahi Handi.

Speaking to dna, Umesh said that he had asked his son to not to be a part of the human pyramid, but the boy did not heed to his advice.

Sujal is a class five student at Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Ulhasnagar and the youngest among his siblings. On Thursday, when he fell down and injured his head, he was first rushed to Shivneri Hospital in Ulhasnagar. Later in the night, he was shifted to Fortis Hospital in Kalyan, where he has been recovering in the ICU department.

Three days after the fall, Sujal remains on the ventilator. Doctors have kept him sedated as he has brain swelling. "When we reduce the sedatives, Sujal becomes aggressive and tries to take off the ventilator wires. Excessive movement can increase his swelling, which is why we are keeping him sedated. Only once the swelling is reduced will we be able to tell the extent of the damage caused to him," said Dr Ashok Borisa, laparoscopic surgeon at Fortis Kalyan who is treating him.
