A student of Shishu Vihar School at Dadar, Rutvik lived with his mother, a domestic worker, and two elder sisters – one studies in a degree college, while the other works as a nurse. He had lost his father when he was nearly a year old. Being the youngest, he was the cynosure of all eyes, said relatives.

Family members said Rutvik showed signs of discomfort on Wednesday night. Sensing something was unusual, they took him to KEM hospital, where doctors declared him brought on arrival around 1.30 on Thursday.

His sister Manali Ghadshi said Rutvik had got jaundice and his treatment for the liver ailment got over a few days ago. The teenager is believed to have suffered a heart failure, said sources.

The family had moved to Nariman Bhat Nagar in old Prabhadevi area from Wadala two years ago. Average in studies, a relative said, Rutvik had promised his mother to score good marks in SSC and do well in future. "He was playful child. He never had any heart problems," said Abhay Pair, a relative. "He had asked his mother to wake him up early so that he could prepare well for his first language paper."

The boy's death has also left the neighbours in shock. "Rutvik used to play kabaddi for the under-15 team of our Om Gyandeep Mandal and was a good player. He also had good scope in cricket. On Wednesday night, he played with balloons before Holi," said a neighbour.

Till 10 pm, the neighbour said, Rutvik was playing outside. "It is unimaginable that he can have some heart ailment."

Dr Harish Pathak, head of Forensic Science department at KEM Hospital, said there was no obvious cause of death. "We have persevered his organs to get a histopathology report.
