Two dacoities in a span of three days under its jurisdiction has left the Thane Police red-faced, with six dacoits holding a Badlapur family hostage and looting them of cash and valuables worth Rs2.7 lakh. The dacoits assaulted the family and locked them inside a bedroom before escaping. This, after seven other dacoits looted a cash management firm of a whopping Rs5 crore on Monday.

Santosh Sonawane (27), a resident of Badlapur on Barvi dam road of Sonivali village, had finished his supper and gone off to bed when, around 2.30am, he and his family heard a loud noise near the main door's entrance.

Waking up, the family saw six men who had broken into their home armed with bamboos. These men then began assaulting Sonawane and his younger brother and tied them up with ropes. Sonawane's wife and mother, too, were too not spared and were tied up.

According to the Badlapur police, the six men are suspected to be from the Chaddi Baniyan Gang since the family members revealed that they were wearing vests and underwear, which is similar to the outfit that dacoits from the notorious gang operating in the Thane and Palghar regions wear.

Santosh Sonawane said: "The dacoits tied up the entire family and assigned one man to keep a watch on us even though we were covered with blankets. They started searching the house and decamped with cellphones, jewellery and cash."

He added: "The dacoits assaulted us and threatened to kill us if we alerted the locals or tried to resist. They locked us inside a bedroom and escaped."

RJ Jagtap, investigating officer, Badlapur police station, said: "We have registered a case under Sections 394 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons and are investigating further. The accused had conducted a recce before striking at the residence."

In the first incident early on Monday morning, dacoits struck at Checkmate Cash Management Services Pvt Ltd at Teen Haath Naka in Thane and managed to decamp with cash worth Rs5 crore as mentioned in the First Information Report, with the total possibly increasing to Rs9.12 crore eventually.
