In the wake of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiating an 'Eating Right' initiative to curb the increasing number of obesity, hypertension, and cases of other diseases in the youth, the Mumbai Dabbawala Association will submit a letter to the FDA Commissioner, to help them start dabbawala services in schools for healthy meal.

Recently, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Education Minister Vinod Tawde have supported the dabbawala association and has directed the police and government authorities to facilitate dabbawala services to school students. However, many of the school authorities have denied the tiffin service citing security reasons.

While the FDA has now come up with healthy food guidelines for the schools and other education institutes, the Mumbai Dabbawala Association will be seeking help from the FDA.

HURDLES

  • Despite state govt’s directives to facilitate tiffin service to students, school managements cite security reasons to stop dabbawalas from operating in schools

  • Dabbawalas claim that schools and canteen owners have a pact because of which they don’t allow tiffin service

Speaking about the issue, Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of Mumbai Dabbawala Association, said, "We have been delivering homemade healthy meals tiffin services in offices and other institutions/organisation. While the FDA is promoting healthy meal in educational institutions, we want the FDA to support our tiffin service so that the students will be able to eat healthy meals rather than eating from junk food from the canteen. The education institutions and canteen owners have a pact because of which they don't allow us to serve homemade tiffin service."

Talekar further added, "We will write a letter and submit it to FDA commissioner so that we can start tiffin service in schools again. Students should be provided with healthy, nutritious food."

The initiative by FDA aims to reduce the intake of high fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) products which are easily available and are known to cause health complications.
