Praveen Singh Pardeshi, the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, played the good Samaritan on Tuesday morning when he ensured that a victim of an accident he witnessed on the busy Marine Drive was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Pardeshi and his deputy Kailash Shinde were stuck in traffic on Marine Drive when they witnessed the accident where a cyclist, Ballaudin Mohammed Sheikh, 50, was run over by a speeding car.

The cyclist was thrown off his cycle onto the road when the door of a car in front of him was flung open suddenly. In a fraction of a second, a speeding car from behind ran over the cyclist. The incident took place outside the Government Press near Charni Road station. Shocked at what transpired, Pardeshi rushed out of his car and rushed to the aid of the victim.

Pardeshi said that while they were rushing the victim to hospital, he contacted the hospital on phone and the person was immediately attended to on reaching the hospital.

Pardeshi said, "Since a fast car had ran over him, the person suffered fractured ribs and we could not save him." The Principal Secretary said he resumed his official duties after admitting the patient to the hospital. He later sent an aide from his office to talk to the doctor to enquire whether the victim needed financial help.

"The doctors said no financial help was required, but I was pained to know that we could not save him," Pardeshi said. He added that while rushing the patient to GT Hospital, he ensured that the person who had opened the door of the car without warning, causing the accident, was nabbed by the police at the spot.

"We were not able to nab the driver of the speeding car immediately. A police investigation is underway. We are scanning through CCTV footage to identify the car and the driver," Pardeshi added.
