Three persons working in a private company at Fort were baffled when they were intimated by their banks that their credit cards have been used in petrol pumps in Hyderabad and Pune for transactions collectively worth Rs3.06 lakh. It is then that the trio realised their cards were missing. They lodged a complaint with the MRA Marg police in this regard.

According to senior police inspector Ashok Jagdale, one of the victims is a 25-year-old (name withheld) resident of Grant Road.

"The victim and two of her colleagues had approached us on September 16. They stated that they received alerts from their banks informing them of transactions they never made. After having received these alerts, they realised that their cards were stolen," said Jagdale.

The trio then registered a complaint against unknown persons under sections 380 (theft), 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the IT Act.

"During inquiry, the bank revealed that the cards were used in petrol pumps in Hyderabad and Pune. The Fort office from where the cards were stolen was not covered by CCTV cameras and hence it is difficult to identify the person. We will be sending a team to Pune to scan the CCTV images of the petrol pump to get some clue," Jagdale said.

The police are not ruling out an insider's hand in the crime and are investigating the case from that angle too. "Transactions have been made from different places and hence there is considerable reason to suspect that it's a large gang of cyber crooks that is involved in this case," said another police officer.
