In yet another foot-in-the-mouth moment, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that incidents of rape can be stopped if the genitals of rapists are cut off.

On Monday, while addressing a function organised by the Nationalist Congress Party’s women’s wing in Jalna, situated 400km from Mumbai, Pawar said that if a “rascal” does not change his ways even after repeated warnings, he should be given harsh punishment.

He went on to add, “We should find a permanent solution to problems like rape. We should cut off the genitals of rapists. If this step is taken seriously and successfully, then other perverts will automatically be deterred from committing such crimes.”

Pawar is not new to such brash and controversial statements. In April this year, while addressing a public meeting in Pune’s Indapur, Pawar had mocked Bhaiyya Deshmukh, a farmer from a drought-hit area in Solapur, asking, “If there is no water in the dam, how can we release it? Should we urinate into it?” This comment had stirred up a hornet’s nest, following which Pawar was forced to apologise.

Following his latest comment, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut had a crucial question — who will take up the task of cutting the rapists’ private parts?

He added, “This is a shameless government. Earlier too, Pawar had promised he would teach a lesson to moneylenders who exploit the poor. But nothing happened. He only makes tall claims to influence people. However, people are smart now; they won’t fall for his talks.”

Sena MLC Neelam Gohre said Pawar’s statement was a ploy to divert attention from the irrigation scam. She added, “Also, he wants to lure women voters by making such bold statements.”

Sagar Sanap, the general secretary of BJP’s youth wing (south Mumbai), believes that such remarks are almost always made to grab the attention of the masses.

“The government should instead introspect and figure out why women are being attacked in the first place. There is no fear in criminals’ minds. They are confident that they can get away with it easily. This is the reason why crime against women is on the rise,” he said.
