The Aarey Green Film Festival is all set to open next weekend. The two-day event will have film screenings, lectures, nature trails, exhibits and a photo contest.

On July 19, the New Zealand Hostel inside Aarey Milk Colony will turn into a hub of environment enthusiasts, conservationists and environmentalists.

"The film festival is expected to become an annual event, underscoring the importance of Aarey with multiple linkages to our ecosystem. It seeks to inspire young and old Mumbaikars alike to appreciate the natural wealth around us and to create concern for Aarey's precarious position," said Manish Gadia, the co-organiser of the event.

Over 10 films made by professionals, nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, conservationists, and travellers will be screened. Each movie will be followed by a talk to reply to the queries from participants.

There would be a small exhibit centre, a display area for the leopard photography contest, as well as food stalls.

"Various projects of the groups will also be exhibited and interested persons could choose a cause close to their heart, thus doing something more meaningful than just discussing the problems in the city," added Gadia.

"25 leopard photographs from a photography contest, along with 10 pictures taken from camera traps set by Nikit Surve will be exhibited," added Gadia.

Among the themes of the festival is how to live alongside leopards, especially in the backdrop of human-animal conflicts that have happened in the last few years.

Moreover, hour-long nature trails have also been organised to explain the importance of the environment to people from across age groups.

"Aarey Colony CEO Gajanan Raut too has given us ideas to make the festival better. He will be the chief guest at the event," said Gadia.

The Aarey Green Film Festival has been organised to create awareness among Mumbaikars about this green lung well within Mumbai civic limits. The film festival is being organised against the backdrop of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation's plans to have a car depot in Aarey Milk Colony. Recently, the proposed Development Plan of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation mentioned the prospect of development in Aarey Milk Colony by making it a growth hub.
