Residents of Cuffe Parade are planning to give a compost machine to a slum pocket in their area to help the slum dwellers compost wet waste. The residents have joined hands with their local corporator for the move so that more citizens come forward for similar acts of charity. The machine is expected to arrive by January.
The residents said that the idea is to keep the neighbourhood clean while they keep their house clean too. "What is the point of keeping our house clean if the neighbourhood is dirty? Swachh Bharat means that everything should be swachh around us," said Parag Udani, a Cuffe Parade resident who is looking to sponsor the compost machine partially along with the corporator. "This way, we not only introduce clean habits for ourselves but also our slum folks. When people read about this, they too should come forward to help in similar ways."

"We will first start with an awareness program. We are also getting together change agents. A cluster of 20 women will spread awareness about waste segregation in the slum area," said Harshita Narwekar, local corporator, who will contribute Rs 6 lakh towards the machine. Narwekar and members from the BMC's Solid Waste Management Department will join the residents in creating awareness among the slums.
