The Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) have asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take action against illegal hawkers in their area, besides moving some of them for better pedestrian movement on footpaths.

"The issue of illegal hawkers has been around for a long time. We have been complaining continuously but due to political patronage, not much action is taken," said Padmakar Nandekar, secretary general of CPRA.

Nandekar said that there are two sets of hawkers who create problem. "These are those that are there in morning and also those in the evening between the stretch of President Hotel and World Trade Centre," said Nandekar.

The ones opposite World Trade Centre who cook pasta do so on the divider of the road. "They cook on the main divider which is dangerous. At night, there is problem due to that. People cannot use that space and it creates traffic nuisance. While on one hand people are not supposed to halt their cars out there, they stop them by giving their menu and also serving," said Nandekar.

Nandekar said that they have also given a complaint on the issue of moving of some legal hawkers. "These are near the GD Somani school and places where the space to walk is less. Since hawkers hawk, people have to use the road which is dangerous. Once there was also an accident in the area. We want all the legal ones to be moved to one place. While illegal hawkers have not been moved due to support from politicians, we are hoping speedier action on this. On illegal hawkers they seem to be bribing the authorities. We have asked the new elected representatives and they said they will do something about it," said Nandekar.

"Usually legal hawkers we do not prefer to move because there are complications later one. Permission from commissioner is required on that. For illegal hawkers, we keep calling for extra vehicles and remove them, especially those that are cooking in the night we are removing. They are not there now," said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, A-ward, which covers the Cuffe Parade area.
