The Cuffe Parade police had made inquiries with all 23 flats in the building from where a 30-year-old maid had fallen to death few days ago but none of the residents gave any information to the police. The police, on Monday, registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against a cook and an another case against the employer and four others for not informing police about the incident.

Explaining the sequence of events, a police officer said, a birthday party was organised in room number 192 of one Ramesh Bhojwani (65), on Friday, in the A-wing of Maker Chamber building. Two caretakers Aruna Ingole (25) and Tambe, cook Suman alias Sanju Raut (35), and other helps Kishore Das (35), Pawan Yadav (25), Ramnarayan Raut (32) and Raj Raut (22) were also present at the home.

Around 8am, someone from the building spotted the body lying on the porch and brought it to the notice the watchman. The police was then informed, said deputy commissioner of police (Zone I), Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma.

"We checked the CCTV footage of the housing society, but the security could not identify the woman. Then our officers made inquiries with each and every flat in the building, but nobody knew the woman or had seen her in the vicinity. We had to then warn the residents that they would face police action if they are hiding the facts. Finally around 11am, Bhojwani, who stays on the 19th floor of the building, identified the body as of Tambe who worked as his caretaker," said a police officer.

Inquiries with Bhojwani, Ingole and other employees revealed that Bhojwani had also offered drinks to his employees. "Later Tambe and other male employees went in the kitchen, while Bhojwani and Ingole went to their respective rooms. They all were heavily drunk. Tambe sustained an injury after a broken glass hit her toe. Suman then suggested her to sit near the window knowing that his could be fatal and tried to get the piece of glass out of her toe. Tambe then lost her balance and slipped out of the window," said the officer.

The male employees then informed Bhojwani about the incident, who told them to leave from the house.

While the medical reports of Tambe had confirmed that she was not sexually assaulted, the another task ahead of the police was to ensure whether she committed suicide or had an accidental fall.

"We threw a dummy from the same place from where Tambe had fallen and checked the place where the body landed. If she would have committed suicide then she would have landed some distance away from where her body was found and hence it got clear that she had an accidental fall," said the officer.

"While Suman has been booked and arrested under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), while Bhojwani, Ingole, Kishore, Pawan, Ramnarayan and Raj have been booked under section 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) of the Indian penal code," said senior police inspector Deepak Patil.
