CSMT bridge collapse: Civic official arrested

Around two weeks after making the first arrest in connection with the collapse of the Himalaya Bridge, the Azad Maidan police have arrested a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee on Monday. S F Kakulte, an assistant engineer with the bridges department, was arrested on Monday evening from his residence.

According to the police, Kakulte, along with three other engineers of the bridges department was suspended and the civic chief had ordered an inquiry against them in connection with the tragedy. Investigations revealed that Kalkute was responsible for poor supervision of the structural audit. "Kalkute has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The case is still under investigation and senior officials are keeping a daily tab on the progress made in the case so far," said Abhishek Trimukhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) refusing to divulge further details.

On March 18, the police had arrested Neeraj Desai, the structural auditor of the bridge on from his residence.
