The city crime branch sleuths on Tuesday arrested six men for allegedly duping a senior citizen to the tune of Rs1.60 lakh on the pretext of providing him medicine that can cure his ailment. The accused persons told the victim that pure gold would be required to be mixed in the medicine that would cure his ailment. The unsuspecting victim went to a jewellery shop and bought gold worth Rs1.60 lakh through his credit card and gave it to the fraudsters.

The arrested persons were identified as Nitin Dhanavade (29), Sunil Jagtap (29), Govind Vargatte (53), Laxman Dasarjogi (30), Anil Shirke (27), and Shriram Gudil (29).

According to the police, the complainant in the case is one Yogendra Thakore (71). On January 14, 2016, Dasarjogi had met Thakore outside a bank in Chembur. He identified that Thakore could not walk properly due to pain in knee joints. Dasarjogi told Thakore that he could help him to get rid of his ailment and took Thakore's mobile number.

After few hours, Jagtap called on Thakore's phone and told him to visit Naupada in Thane on January 17 to get medicines for his ailment. On reaching Naupada, Thakore met Gudil.

"Gudil told Thakore that for a quick relief from old age related ailment, he would have to put 60 grams of gold in the medicine. Thakore then went to a jeweller shop in Thane along with Jagtap and Gudil and bought gold worth Rs1.60 lakh through his credit card," said a crime branch officer.
