Crime against women: One rape, three molestation incidents put six in jail

Accused in three of the four cases have been arrested by the cops and are now in police custody.

Around three incidents of molestation and rape occurred in Thane region on Saturday. Accused in three of the four cases have been arrested by the cops and are now in police custody.

On May 19, at around 1.30am Mahadu Wagh (52) from Mumbra kidnapped his neighbour's 11-year-old daughter and raped her. The girl was fast asleep with her mother and younger brother when the incident happened. The man entered the house, gagged the girl and took her to a hilly desolated spot nearby and raped her after thrashing. "The girl had lost her father six months back. We have arrested Wagh and he is in police custody," says senior police inspector S G Jawale, Shil Daighar police station, Thane.

In another incident at around 10.45am, a 28-year-old woman from Bhiwandi was molested by her neighbour. The woman was busy with household chores when the man quietly entered the house and caught her from behind. "He asked her not to scream and offered Rs 500. The woman asked him to leave after he touched her inappropriately," says a police official from Bhiwandi police station. Based on the woman's complaint the man was arrested.

At around 9 am, a 23-year-old woman from Kongaon who works in nearby R K G godown was on her way to work when a man on Activa accosted her. He asked the lady for her contact number and then asked her to sit on her bike. When the lady refused he verbally abused her and threatened to harm her. He then escaped from the spot. No arrest has been made yet.

In another shocking incident, a 30-year-old woman police constable was verbally abused and molested right inside the police station. At around 11.15 pm, Lalit Makhija, Anil Makhija, Nirmal and Jyoti Makhija went to Vithalwadi police station to register a complaint. "They lodged a complaint against a third party in their area following a dispute with them. They then asked us to accompany them and arrest the person they had filed the case against," says a police official from Vithalwadi. "Assuring them to take action accordingly, we asked them to go home. But they were adamant. When we asked a lady constable to make them understand, they misbehaved with her," says the cop. Thus, the cops registered a complaint against them, following which they were arrested.
