The long pending demand of the Sikh community for a crematorium finally got a positive response. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is likely to add names of the Sikh community in some crematoriums in the city where community population is in sizable numbers.

The community has been demanding separate crematorium spaces for themselves. It had written a letter to the state minority commission and municipal commissioner last year in May demanding that crematoriums be provided to them.

“The BMC stated that since the new Develoment Plan (DP) is in the making, they will be considering the same,” said Mandeep Singh Ladi, sevedar at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, the umbrella body of Sikh Gurudwaras in city.   Mohammed Hussain Khan, chairperson of the state minorities commission said, “We have written a letter to the municipal corporation asking them about their plans and what they have to say about the demand. The procedure is that we first take their inputs before recommending them anything.” Khan’s office had written a letter in January this year to the office of municipal commissioner.

While municipal commissioner, Ajoy Mehta did not respond to calls and smes from DNA, a senior BMC official in the know said, “The municipal corporation is positively looking at the demand of the community.  The procedures of the Sikh community are no different from those of the Hindu community except for certain prayers,” said an official.
