Creating awareness, the only solution: Cops

According to Mumbai police, the only way to curb the growing menace of fake cops in the city is to create awareness about it. Police believe criminals, who pose as fake cops and dupe people, are taking advantage of people's ignorance and fear.

Police have been, in the last few years, carrying out various drives to create awareness on the crime among people. Cops have been using various tools to reach out to citizens and have also stepped up policing.

In 2010, the police had created a video on the various modus operandi used by fake cops to dupe people. They also held a number of meetings in various housing societies in the city to sensitize people on the issue. Around the same time, police also showed a short ad films in multiplexes on the issue.

"We appealed to people not to wear valuable ornaments when they travel alone. We also put up a number of banners across the city appealing to people to be on the look out for fake cops," said an officer.
