Vipin Thapar, cousin of Navi Mumbai builder Raj Kandhari, who committed suicide on May 9, was arrested on Friday after police recovered a suicide note during a search at Kandhari's office. Thapar was produced in the Vashi court on Saturday and remanded in to police custody till May 18. His family, meanwhile, claimed that the theory of business rivalry between the two cousins was a conspiracy.

Prominent builder Kandhari (43) shot himself in the right side of his head with his licensed 32-inch American-made pistol at his 11th floor residence in Raj Uday building on May 9. During the preliminary investigation, police recovered a sentimental, three-page note from his home in Sanpada Sector 1, written by Kandhari. On May 10, the builder succumbed to his injuries at MGM hospital in Vashi at 8.20pm.

On the basis of the note, police first presumed that Kandhari was in depression, as his losses were mounting and he was unable to do repay his loan. But then on May 12, they discovered the second suicide note from a drawer during a search at Kandhari's Vashi Sector 17 office in Aranja Corner building.

The note had two paragraphs with Kandhari's signature. In the first paragraph, he wrote, "Vipin Thapar is responsible for my suicide. He destroyed my everything (family) and pleaded for a job. He has stolen money in cash and started his own work, even though he takes his salary in cash too. I am committing suicide. I believe in judiciary and I pray Vipin Thapar get tough punishment."

Meanwhile, Thapar's brother Nitin told dna, "My brother worked with the Swaraj group four years ago. Then four months ago, Kandhari called one or two times, asking for some help. Currently, we have no contact with him. All allegations against my brother are false."

Thapar's advocate Dinesh Gupta said, "Kandhari's wife said the suicide note was recovered four days after the incident. He committed suicide at his residence while the note was found from his office, far away from his house. My client is innocent."

"Actually, the story is completely different. There were business complications. My client was with Kandhari till 2012. From 2012-2014, he had nothing do with Kandhari and there was no dispute. Kandhari's wife accused that Thapar stole their money. Then why were they sitting quiet for four years? Now-a-days, builders are going through a tough time."
