A vacation bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday directed the dean of JJ Hospital to constitute a medical board, with a minimum of three doctors, to examine arrested NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, before it decided on his temporary bail application.

Bhujbal moved the high court for bail on Friday. His counsel Amit Desai and advocate Sajal Yadav pleaded for bail on medical grounds, citing his heart condition as the primary reason.

Justice Ajey Gadkari directed the authorities to produce Bhujbal at the hospital around 10am on May 24 and complete all the formalities. He will later be shifted back to the Arthur Road prison. The board has been told to submit its report to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigating officer, who will submit it in the court.

Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer are in the judicial custody, following their arrest in connection with a Rs840 crore money laundering case filed by the ED. Bhujbal had earlier said the case against him was "concocted".

The case concerns a contract for the construction of Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi and alleged land grabbing in Mumbai's Kalina.

Bhujbal's last month visit to St George Hospital had attracted controversy. A team of JJ doctors gave a clean chit to the St George hospital administration to admit him in intensive care unit. It was necessary, said the two-member JJ team. The court will now hear Bhujbal's bail plea on May 27.

Relief for Pankaj till May 25

The high court on Friday restrained the Enforcement Directorate from enforcing a non-bailable warrant issued against Pankaj Bhujbal, son of arrested NCP leader
Chhagan Bhujbal. The relief is till May 25, when the court is likely to hear Pankaj's plea, challenging the issuance of the warrant.
