The Bombay High Court on Friday appointed a court receiver to open two bank lockers held by late Sangeet Natak Academy laureate Sushila Rani Patel to find out if there are any demonetized Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 notes in them. If the old notes are found, they will be deposited in a new bank account.

The Sushilarani Baburao Patel Trust has been involved in a dispute with the grand-daughter of her late husband Baburao Patel over the rights of the stately Girnar Bungalow at Pali Hill in Bandra. Sushila Rani, who passed away a few years back, was the third wife of Baburao Patel, who founded India's first film trade magazine.

Patel, who also produced films and was an MP from Madhya Pradesh in the 4th Lok Sabha, bought the bungalow in the 1950s, and its rights had passed on to Sushila Rani after his death in 1982.

An application moved by Neela Shinde, executrix of the will and Chairman of the Trust, said that two personal lockers, at the Union Bank of India and Vijaya Bank in Bandra, could have cash in the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, along with other valuables. By a Union Government notification on November 8, the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes have ceased to be legal tender. If the money is allowed to remain in the locker, it would amount to a loss to the estate of the deceased.

The plea added that before approaching the court, applications were made to the banks, but they replied in the negative and sought court orders for opening bank accounts as the matter was in dispute and before the court.

Shinde said the court allowed the plea and has appointed the Court Commissioner who would open the locks in his presence, gather the money and then deposit it in a new account either to be opened by him or in the name of the estate.

Geeta Patel D'Souza, the grand-daughter of Baburao Patel's second wife, Shirin Patel, has occupied the first floor of the bungalow, while the Trust operates from the ground floor.
