A Giragum-based elderly couple Narayan Lavate (88) and his wife Iravati (78) who had earlier made a plea to President seeking permission for active euthanasia, has now filed a Right To Information (RTI) in order to get a response for the plea written.
Last year, on December 21, 2017, both husband and wife had made a plea to President Ram Nath Kovind but haven't received any response so far. They had decided to wait for the response till March 2018. But looking at the lack of response, they filed an RTI application on March 20, to the Chief Information Officer (Chief Secretary) to the President to hear the response to the appeal filed.
Speaking about the RTI application, Narayan Lavate, said, "Since we did not receive any kind of response, we filed an RTI application. In the case of Life and Death, the rule is to submit the information asked within 48 hours. But we haven't yet received any reply to our RTI application yet."
While they waited to get a reply on RTI filed, they have now appealed for a First Appeal hearing on the RTI. Lavate, added, "On March 31, we filed for the First Appeal on the RTI. Now we will have to wait for 30 days to get a reply on our First Appeal hearing."
The couple has asked for the president's intervention to seek permission for 'active euthanasia'. On March 9, when the Supreme Court announced their judgment on euthanasia, they were not happy since the judgment only included passive euthanasia and did not consider active euthanasia.
In their petition on December 21, 2017, Lavate had written that they both have good health and not suffering from any kind of serious ailment.
