The Malwani police on Saturday registered an accidental death report after a newly-wed couple committed suicide by hanging themselves at their home in Malwani late on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Dhanraj Nai, 24, and Kajal Nai, 19.

According to the police, the couple were married four months ago. On Friday night, the couple was found hanging at room no 71 in New Collector's compound by his younger brother. The police said that they committed suicide with the help of a saree. The police were alerted after Nai's brother saw him and the couple was rushed to Samanya hospital where they were pronounced dead before admission.

"We do not know what made them take such a drastic step. In fact, Dhanraj had met me in the afternoon and said that he was looking forward to playing Garba," said Sanjay Yadav, Nai's neighbour.

Locals also claimed that Dhanraj, after marriage, had lost his job. This could be the reason for their depression. However, the police did not confirm any such claims.

"We have registered an accidental death report in the matter and are probing the reason behind the suicide. So far, we have learnt that he was working in a factory and had left the job on his own after the couple tied the knot four months ago," said Deepaj Phatangare, senior police inspector of Malwani police station adding that they are carrying out the preliminary inquiries and will be recording statements from family members.
