Even as private hospitals are trying to generate immense profits by over-billing patients, medical students studying at private institutes are being heavily charged year on year with their skyrocketing fee structures.

With the increasing competition to get a medical seat in the state coupled with the fewer number of government seats has led to the proliferation of private and deemed medical colleges that charge anywhere between Rupees 5 lakh to 50 lakh per annum for an MBBS course as opposed to a Government Medical College where the average annual fee is between 50 thousand to 1 lakh.

Each medical student who is admitted into a private medical college has to spend under several heads every year- from tuition expenses, examination fees to dining and hostel charges, an amount which increases year on year. At the Terna Medical college in Nerul for instance, a student from the general category has to pay an amount of rupees 5,40,000 as tuition fees , rupees 75,000 as hostel fees and several other miscellaneous expenses. In 2017, there were around 2,970 seats in government medical colleges, 1870 in private and 1800 in deemed colleges this year. At Kashibai Navale college in Pune, a student has to shell out 9,72,222 for tuition fees and over a lakh rupees as development funds and other expenses.

At several private colleges, an NRI quota seat costs anywhere between 35,00,000 to 1 crore. “Getting a seat into a government medical college has become next to impossible with the increasing competition. An average student spends anywhere between between 20-50 lakhs for an MBBS degree after which one has to again spend for PG” said a student of a private medical college in the city.

Sudha Shenoy, parent of a medical student said “Profiteering by private hospitals is because of the private investment into healthcare these days and has nothing to do with doctors as they are merely working as per the set norms of the hospital. On the other hand, students and parents are struggling to pay the sky rocketing fees of privater and deemed colleges which increase every year. Several parents who somehow manage to pool in some money and resources to admit their children into medical colleges are not able to sustain when institutes hike their fees by huge margins every year” added Shenoy.
