Cutting across party lines, corporators from NMMC have united over the issue of redevelopment and additional construction at lower income group (LIG) apartment associations in the satellite city.

Leader of opposition, Dilip Ghodekar, has moved a calling attention motion which is likely to be tabled during the coming general body meeting to be held later this month.

The general body meeting scheduled for Tuesday was adjourned after paying respects to Vashi corporator Ramesh Shinde who passed away recently. The issue of LIG apartments had earlier figured during the standing committee meeting where all members  demanded reverting to old system of granting permission for redevelopment.

As per the new rule, if a resident of apartment association plans to construct additional rooms he has to get a no objection certificate from all the members of the association. Earlier, he had to get NOC from his neighbours and the committee of the apartment owners association. NCP corporator Vikram Shinde, too, has brought in a proposal in this regard which may be tabled during general body meeting.

Congress corporator, Sindhu Naik, who had raised the matter, said, “It is difficult to get signatures of all the members and the construction gets stuck as the town planning department refuses to grant commencement certificate. This is the reason why most people do not approach NMMC and carry out illegal construction.”

Earlier, the town planning department gave permission only after checking whether Cidco and NMMC dues were cleared, checking the construction plan and getting NOCs from immediate neighbours. However, since the last few months it is insisting on getting NOCs from all the members of the association.

Municipal commissioner Abasahed Jarhad had assured that a solution will be worked out within the framework of law. Additional director of town planning, Prakash Thakur, said, “We had referred the matter to the legal department, which informed us that as per the law NOC of all members was mandatory.”
