The Mumbai Crime Branch on Tuesday safely rescued a six-year-old boy who was kidnapped on Monday evening by five persons who demanded Rs50 lakh as ransom. The police have arrested three accused in the case while two others are on run.

According to police officers, the boy, who stays with his family in Malvani, went missing between 6pm and 8pm near his father's workplace on Monday. When the father realised what had happened, the family started searching the area with the help from local people. The family then approached the Malvani police station and registered a missing complaint.

Worst fears of the boy's parents came true when the uncle of the kidnapped boy received a ransom call demanding Rs50 lakh for the child's safe return. "The crime branch was informed about the case. The ransom call was made around 11.54pm on Monday night and we initiated an investigation immediately," said Sadanand Date, joint commissioner of police (Crime). He added: "At around 4.20am, police inspector Manohar Harpude received information that the boy was last seen with a person. Acting on this information we picked up a suspect and questioned him."

The crime branch officer said the suspect picked up by them was employed by the child's father and was identified as Abdul Rehman Ansari, 20. The police, on the basis of sustained interrogation of the suspect, got details about a rented room in a Goregaon slum where the child was kept captive by two other accused.

"When the team reached the place, two accused were found guarding the place. We arrested them in connection with the case," said Date adding: "We believe that the accused had planned in advance as the room in Goregaon was taken on rent around 10 days ago."

Throwing light on the modus operandi employed by the accused, an officer said:

"The boy was lured with chocolates and the accused took him on a cycle to some distance. Later, they shifted him to Goregaon on a motorbike."
