Cops raid gambling dens, bar in city

The social service branch (SSB) of city police conducted three raids across the city on Tuesday. A bar and restaurant and two gambling dens were raided.

According to deputy commissioner of police Pravin Patil, on receipt of information, at 6.45pm on April 21, a Matka den near Busa Industries at AD Marg in Sewree was raided. Eight people — two writers and six players — were arrested and Rs9,780 was seized. A case under section 12(a) of the Gambling Act has been registered with RA Kidwai Marg police station.

Around 9.15pm on the same day, a Matka den at Sai Ganesh, an online lottery centre at Seaman Rubin building on JSS Road in Girgaum, was raided. Twelve people, including a conductor, a writer and ten players were arrested and Rs29,410 was seized. A case under section 4(1), 7(3) of the Lottery Regulation Act and 4(a), 5 of the Gambling Act has been registered at VP Toad police station.

At 11.15pm, a raid was conducted at Lotus Bar and restaurant located at Parsi Panchayat Road in Andheri (E). Eleven bar girls were rescued by the SSB. The owner of the bar was arrested and Rs18,350 was seized. A case has been registered under sections 294, 114 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at Jogeshwari police station.
