From installing more CCTVs, lighting up isolated spots to requesting hoteliers to offer drop services for its drunk customers, the Mumbai police have planned a slew of initiatives to ensure a safe and crime-free New Year's eve.

The department has requested the BMC to set up CCTVs at about 20 vulnerable places in the city where a lot of people are expected to gather to celebrate. Milind Bharambe, additional commissioner of police (west region), said, "In the western suburbs, we have requested for more CCTVs at Bandstand, Carter Road, Juhu and Versova beach etc. We will be keeping a round-the-clock watch via the CCTVs. These spots will also be well-illuminated to ensure no untoward incidents happen."

Over 250 spots in the city have been identified where the officials plan to set up better lighting to prevent crimes. These include beach fronts, promenades and several bylanes, mill areas, abandoned buildings and parking lots of restaurants and malls. A police officer said, "We want revellers to have a good time. Uniformed officers and also officers in civilian clothes which will include women officers will be deployed all over the city to keep a tab of the goings-on. Any untoward incident, be it eve teasing, harassment or drunken brawls, will not be tolerated." Late night nakabandis will also be strengthened this year along major roads and junctions, said the police.

The department has also communicated with restaurant and hotel authorities to increase their drop/ valet services. The hotels have been asked to provide drop services to customers who are drunk and therefore not in a position to drive. "We have asked pub owners and hoteliers to keep a check on drunken revelers. We have also asked them to step up their internal security and inform us if they find unruly characters inside their premises. Since most hoteliers are hesitant about informing us about any untoward incident as it defames their brand, we have deployed our officials outside all the popular restaurants and pubs," added Bharambe.
