A 38-year old man died under mysterious circumstances after a police team reached his residence to arrest his tenant who was an accused in a rape case.

The incident took place in East Delhi's Kalyanpuri area on Saturday night.

While family members alleged he was thrashed by the police who had come to the house to arrest the tenant, police said a medical board has been constituted to ascertain the cause of death.

The board will conduct the post-mortem on Monday.

According to the police, the deceased, Sukhbir Singh (38) resided in Kalyanpuri with his wife Amritkaur and children. Sukhbir had rented out the second floor of his house to a man identified as Manjeet for Rs 3,500. Manjeet and his mother and three sisters stayed in the area.

Amritkaur said that on Saturday night, around 12:30 am, seven police officials reached their residence and asked for Manjit.

Sukhbir opened the door and a team from Sultanpuri and Kalyanpuri police stations entered the premises and reached the second floor where Manjit was.

Sukhbir and his family were unaware that their tenant Manjit was an accused in a rape case in Sultanpuri area.

"I was not allowed to go up as the police officials were upstairs. Later we heard Manjit scream in pain and later on my husband as well. Even though there was a woman police officer as well I was not allowed to go up. Later on we heard a loud noise and when we rushed out on the road Sukhbir was lying on the road with his face towards the ground," Amritkaur said.

The police officials later took the accused Manjit in custody. Meanwhile Sukhbir was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigating officials stated that Sukhbir was drunk and fell of the grill and he was not beaten up by the police.
