In an effort to decongest city roads, the traffic police and the city police have initiated a project whereby the city is expected to witness a revamp in traffic administration on several busy roads. The officials have identified ten main roads to carry out traffic transformation by decongesting them.

The initiative, according to officials, is a joint project ideated by joint commissioner of police, law and order, Dhananjay Kamlakar along with senior officials in the traffic department.

"We are in the initial stages of planning and in the process of finalising the roads. The plan will be rolled out in a few weeks in a phased manner," said Kamlakar.

Tentatively, the roads which are in focus are P D'Mello Road, Ambedkar Road, LBS Road, Andheri-Kurla Road, Senapati Bapat Marg, SV Road, Link Road, etc.

Pratap Dighavkar, DCP, traffic, said, "All these busy roads along with their connecting roads will be covered by 25 traffic chowkies along with the local police stations. Technically, it covers all the main areas of the city, but the process will be more structured and efficient as we have identified specific areas and are also involving the local police for the first time."

At least 100 sub-inspectors from local police stations have been given the additional charge of manning traffic, said officials.

According to officials, the emphasis will be on getting rid of double and illegal parking on the roads, along with keeping the roads encroachment-free. "Illegal parking will not be tolerated and there will not be room for encroachments," said an official. That apart, the traffic police plans to increase the number of towing cranes and patrolling vehicles and the local police will provide more manpower assistance in clearing traffic and booking the road offenders.

A senior traffic official said, "The traffic situation is not getting any better. We have 300 vehicles being added to the roads every day, and unfortunately, we do not have that many traffic policemen to man the whole city. With this tie-up, our manpower and vigilance will increase. If required, we will also devise alternate routes and additional signals, check points etc., to control the flow of traffic during peak hours," added a senior traffic official.

The official also added that if parking and encroachment issues are prime areas of focus, then with the presence of more officers across busy junctions the traffic flow will be more disciplined and congestion-free.

P D'Mello Road
Ambedkar Road
LBS Road
Andheri Kurla Road
